Destroyer of Worlds, ARKANE #8, Audiobook

Read this again just to have that adrenaline mixed with some Indian thrill along with some Shiva mythology. The pacing is good and the story is well woven around Indian cities (and heritage) and Penn does it amazingly well that everything is easy to visualize. (Even the gulabi jamuns taste better in this book than reality.) The story has some horror-invoking Kali reimagination and a conspiracy knit around the Shivalinga, with ARKANE protecting the world from yet another powerful relic.

A bomb in Westminster exposes the belly of the underground ARKANE headquarters, right where the vault holding artifacts that could destroy civilization. There is one thing that's stolen. A box that could lead to the destruction of the world. Morgan and Jake are on the case to find the remaining pieces before the person searching for them finds and puts them together. I find Veronica to be one of the best narrators with pauses and speed of speech to go with the events of the story. She adds the right amount of suspense in the moment of pause and she picks up the cadence of speech with the race of the moment. All taking us along for the ride, drawing our hearts to slow and race with the story. She also adds different voice tones and accents for characters making listening a great pleasure. J.F. Penn always starts us off quick with a huge event. I love these beginnings. They make me curious and hold my attention. I thrive off of every word when we start because I know it's going to set the events of the book to come. So much hinted at, so many questions. And we get all the connections and answers through out the story. The story never seems to slow down for me either. There is always a closeness to the timing to keep me held to the words I'm hearing. I don't want to stop listening as there is so much to learn or action to live through. But I do stop, so I can piece together what I've learned, and it does all piece together. Another thing, other than the story/plot writing that holds my attention is the characters. I enjoy Morgan and Jake as a team. The personal tension between Morgan and Jake starts to surface here. Maybe they'll grow closer? Hints have lead up to them possibly doing so. Then their's Director Mariette. Mariette plays a more important part in this book, even if he's not with our two agents throughout the book. We learn more about him and his past. And we get the story from the 'bad guys' POV as well. To see their thinking and actions is always a great addition to moving the story along and keeping me enthralled. This book could be read/listened to on it's own. Sure, the previous books are mentioned, and may have you curious and wanting to go back to them. But the mentions are not detailed to the point that you feel you've missed something. The characters are human and their previous cases and what they've learned will linger with them in their minds, maybe even help them in the current situation, but you will get the information you need if that's the case.

Good story. Easy to read. Great for the train or beach. Gives some interesting insights to the world's various religious beliefs.

Just the way Penn writes is fantastic. Her research, diversity of culture and religious beliefs, confluence of those things and geography, all make for some fascinating stories. This is another great one.

Without being a spoiler, despite a very engaging story line, the heroine seems to pull solutions out of thin air despite having stated she didn't know the source of the clues very well.

Another great book by J F Penn. Her research and attention to detail is nothing but amazing. She keeps you spellbound from start to finish. Jake and Morgan are back together again looking for pieces of a statue after a bombing in London. Part of the statue was stolen from the Arkane safe during the bombing, and the director was seriously injured. This book is fast paced, full of intrigue and suspense, and excitement. I could not put this book down, and I wish it would not take so long for the next book to come out. The books just keep getting better. I am sure you will enjoy this book if you like adventure and action. Enjoy!

Gripping from the start! Perhaps I shouldn't have started reading the book in Trafalgar Square where the action kicks off with a bomb blast set yards from where I was enjoying a coffee! I had to stop reading to look around to make sure there wasn't a suspicious looking chap lurking in the area - certainly engaged the imagination... Looking around I was able to visualise the action as it will have play out in the future movie? Sure to happen one day - all the ingredients are there, suspense, excitement, well rounded and human characters, action, adventure and education due to the authors attention to detailed research. Penns Arkane series improves with each new book, am looking forward to many more... I received an advance copy of this book in return for an honest review but have since purchased a copy... It's so nice to see Jake and Morgan together again. The slow burn of their attraction is a great counterpoint to the speed with which they conduct their latest mission. You know you're in for a great ride when the peaceful early London morning is shattered by an explosion that decimates Trafalgar Square, all to cover up a raid on the ARKANE offices. This sets our two favorite agents off on a hunt to stop religious zealots from killing untold numbers of faithful in India. You may find yourself craving Indian food, bright colors and a cool breeze while developing an aversion to statues of the god Shiva.

I just can't get over how prolific and detailed this author is! I received and advance copy and purchased the e-book from Amazon. In return for the advance copy, I agreed to give an honest review. From her picture, one would suppose that she is making this stuff up, being so young. Granted some of it is (probably): I haven't researched it. However, with her Oxford education in Psychology and Religion, the stories are based on religious beliefs around the world. This book takes us to India, her Morgan and Jake (members of ARKANE) struggle to prevent the destruction of the world. It begins with an attack on Trafalgar Square, which covers an ARKANE facility. The director is harmed in the attack and Morgan and Jake have to figure out who did it, why and then work to stop the perpetrator. Their journeys in India are involved and colorful at the same time. The suspense builds until the very end and it is a must read.

A great read, well worth the wait. It was great having Morgan and Jake back together again racing through another adventure. The new characters were introduced with just enough detail to inform, but not bore you. It read very quickly and I'm eagerly waiting for the next installment.

This is book 8 in the Arkane series. Referred to as Shiva nataraja this is an ancient artifact of tremendous power and destruction if it's energy is harvested with evil intent. A sadistic group of followers is focused on unleashing what is termed the "brahmastra" which has the power of an atomic or nuclear device. Agents Dr. Morgan Sierra and Jake timber are tasked with recovering the pieces of this artifact before they can be assembled and it's power is unleashed. This is an extraordinary, well written novel. Extremely fast paced which I couldn't stop reading until I finished the book. J.F. Penn has the uncanny ability to make you feel like you have been transported to the scene she is describing. This is a stand alone novel, but I would highly recommend that you read the Arkane books in order for a greater insight into the primary characters. This book has a dark twist interwoven into the story and is done in a very tasteful manner. As I have stated in my prior reviews of her writing skills, J.F. Penn has the gift of the golden pen. I enjoyed this book immensely!!!

I received an advance e-book copy from J.F. Penn for my honest review and I also purchased it from amazon.com in that formate. Absolutely awesome, my first read with anything supernatural in it, and surprised that I would like it. Guess it helps that J.F. Penn's writing style just grabs you, has your undivided attention with a tale of good verse evil and you just don't want it to end. Destroyer of Worlds an international thriller that starts in London with a bomb going off, then has you crisscrossing India, Rwanda, Bangladesh, and a few other places. It's really my type of book, due to the fast pace, it's action packed, full of suspense, tension filled, has you on the seat of your pants, an extra load of twist and turns and like the good very evil theme. I like the mythology parts about India, it's well researched, makes it an educational read in away and it's always good to learn something new. Penn's characters are amazing the good ones or the evil ones, they just come to life, making the story all that better and your right their in the midst of the action. I liked both Dr. Morgan Sierra and Agent Jake Timber, they are strong, tough, vulnerable and they just don't give up. my favorite read of the year so far. Penn's one of my favorite authors, definite worth it to check out Destroyer of Worlds. I have the others in the series buried on my TBR list and will start from the beginning of the Arkane Series too catch up. Can't wait for next in the series coming in the fall.
