Sometimes lessons are never learned and the elusive thoughts of fame and notoriety are more important than humanity. This is a fascinating, subject and the characters battle for their own personal gain and knowledge to the world versus the purity of their heart in sacrificing everything to save others. A absolutely marvelous story. One lie after another will leave the crew exposed and unlikely to survive. It’s amazing what the human spirit can justify in order to be successful. Even after others sacrifice themselves, the true nature of an individual remains the same. This is a truly fascinating read.

I loved the blend of vivid character description, the gracious shifting between various points of view, the adrenaline, the thrill of the adventure. I felt like I was there, on board of the Southern Crosswind, salty wind in my hair. At the same time, I was also - luckily - in a safe space, away from the terror.

As a maritime professional in love with vessels, water and sailing, I must say that J.F. Penn has done extensive research of the shipping terms. She is definitely speaking my language!

Mastery use of the visual, auditive and sensory details used to describe the plot, the climax & the characters, merfolk included. The latter are personified in an exquisite writing style.

The psychological analysis of the characters' feelings, thoughts, and their synesthesy with nature is revealed through a detailed portrayal of their unique context and the choices they make.

The ending matches the whole story and shows Eve's transformation after going through the terrible events at sea. Her inner torment, the pros & cons of releasing the bones of the saint back to the creatures, and the choice of keeping the truth about this voyage away from the public eye - all these represent a magic display of human flaws, academic ambition, pivoting back and forth between what is expected and what the fair thing to do is.

A brilliant, intriguing, mysterious read. Highly recommend!

As good as anything this author has written very very very good read ive read all her books abs and this is one of the best

I really enjoy the writing of J.F. Penn. She gets my heart pounding which shows me that I am immersed in her book(s)! The story itself was a tad predictable but that doesn't mean that I didn't thoroughly enjoyed it. I started it on a Sunday morning and was finished with it by Monday evening (and that's because I had to work on Monday!) I look forward to her next book, just don't get it twisted, Bones of the Deep is not so much a thriller as it is a horror story!

Most people know the difference between right and wrong, what’s moral and what isn’t. However, ambition and greed often trigger one to rationalize taking the darker path. Sometimes it pays off, and sometimes bad things happen, as in this book. This is a great thriller story that I really enjoyed.

Adventure thriller on steroids. Loved the evolving story and flawed characters. Feelings of wonder, fantasy, fear, horror and perhaps atonement.

J.F. Penn is the master of horror for this genre of thrillers! Scary enough for you to get a thrill and some anxiety, yet not scary enough to bother your sleep. Brilliant!

This book is labeled as a thriller, but I found it more of a horror novel. When I think thriller, I think of someone acing against time to avert a catastrophe. This was just scary as could be. I hard a hard time getting to sleep the first evening I started reading. So if that is your thing, you will really like this book. The author does a great job establishing the characters, which ones are good, which ones are flawed. And the peril is identified right at the start, which then ramps up as the book goes along. You'll find yourself say, "Oh, no. Oh no" over and over again. Excellent ending.
